Bunina bodies, which are small eosinophilic intraneuronal inclusions in the remaining lower motor neurons, are generally considered to be a specific pathologic hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). One year before a publication by Bunina, van Reeth et al. described similar intracytoplasmic inclusions in the anterior horn cells in a patient with Pick's dementia with atypical ALS.

Microvacuoles, mild neuronal loss, and gliosis in second and third layers of frontal and temporal cortices. Tissue rarefaction in subcortical and deep white matters of frontal and temporal lobes. Moderate loss of pigmented neurons with gliosis in substantia nigra. 2015-09-28 Light microscopy showed abundant eosinophilic Bunina type inclusions widely distributed not only in the motor neurons of the spinal cord and brain stem but also in neurons of the Onuf's and Clarke's nuclei. Fine structural study revealed that the inclusions seen in the Clarke's nuclei were identical to Bunina bodies observed in anterior horn cells. Bunina bodies

Bunina bodies in motor neurons are a core feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Other usual cell inclusions are often temporary inclusions of accumulated proteins, fats, secretory granules or other insoluble components. Inclusion bodies are also found in bacteria as particles of aggregated protein.

Bunina bodies

Bunina bodies are small eosinophilic, hyaline intracytoplasmic inclusions that stain positive for cystatin C and transferrin and are considered specific to ALS (13). Hyaline conglomerates are highly immunoreactive for neurofilaments and are mainly found in the motor neurons of familial ALS patients.
